What People Are Saying
A must read!!!
By Michelle McCormick
Muriel Vasconcellos is amazing!! From the first chapter to the last I was absolutely captivated by her story. How beautiful and gut wrenchingly devastating. She candidly tells of her diagnosis of breast cancer in the 1970’s and how she took a stand and opted for unconventional methods of treatment. She meets the love of her life and you go on a journey with them and learn a bit of history on the way. Even through tragedy and loss she finds a way to live her life and be an inspiration and advocate. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. If you are looking for a good read and need an uplifting story of hope, this book is perfect for you.
Absolutely marvelous! Read this memoir!
I bought this memoir by Muriel Vasconcellos in mid-December and was unable to put it down until I finished reading it, literally pushing my Christmas shopping by a few days. This book grabs you by the soul and doesn’t let you go. The author describes the suffering inflicted by cancer, shares intimate details of the amazing love story with her Brazilian soul mate, and talks of love and loss and her endless attempts at finding physical and emotional balance and peace, which she finally achieves. As a reader, I was in awe of Muriel’s honesty and gained more and more respect for her as the pages progressed. I could sense that digging this deep inside herself must have been agonizing and yet what a liberating experience! You literally see her grow as a human being and you grow along with her. Highly recommended!
This is a beautiful book, both heartbreaking and triumphant. My emotions were all over the place. I feel that the lessons (I can’t think of another word for the epiphanies that the author experiences) in this story are incredibly powerful and absolutely worth sharing. I love her approach to illness…that instead of “fighting” against it, one would do better to embrace all aspects of themselves, including the illness. People have become so disconnected, and it is pretty common to assume that body, mind, and spirit are separate. Muriel’s story is a testament to the fact that this simply is not true. I am blown away.
This book is exceptional! A must read! A deeply touching, bittersweet story, brilliantly written. This book reflects the depth of a soulful woman who has learned to live through deeply wounding experiences, come to terms with her emotions, and heal her pain. Reads like a thriller, yet is deep, raw, and inspiring. This book is a gem. It is a gift to anyone who is in need of inspiration and hope, as well as to those who just wants an exceptionally good book to read. Pages come to life like in a movie, snapshots of history add meaning and relevance, and every chapter is filled with new surprises and give deeper meaning to the one before. Muriel’s story is an inspiration and heart-opener. I found this book to be a thought provoking and enriching experience in my Universe.
Absolutely riveting! Just finished reading it five minutes ago
By J. Kaplan
In order for a memoir to capture my attention, I must love the voice of the writer and be made to care enough to travel the entire distance with them as they tell their life story. This happens when the writer is exposing their vulnerabilities honestly and the story itself is also utterly compelling. With “Finding My Invincible Summer,” not only did the author take you into her completely confidence but the story was so intense and relatable that I could not put it down. During a week of reading where there were many other distractions in my life and in the greater world, I kept yearning to return to this quiet, deeply involving and highly personal story, even as difficult and painful as that life was in parts. Ultimately, the reader is given their own sense of possibilities – that there are indeed attainable solutions to even the most difficult of life’s problems. I found this to be one of the best memoirs I have ever read – and I am a tough critic of memoirs. I recommend sitting in front of the fire and taking some quiet time with this book and you will indeed be rewarded.

This was an amazing book filled with so much emotion! This is another one of those books you don’t want to put down until the very end. The author leaves you yearning for more as you read deeper and deeper into the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read!
Gripping story and a helpful guide
“Finding My Invincible Summer” is a story of tragedy and loss, fierce determination, patience, persistence, and triumph. Muriel’s story takes us through her experience with breast cancer and her search for alternative treatments. Along the way, she is faced with challenges and frustrations that would have made most of us give up, but with dogged determination she bucked the system, stood up for herself, and found solutions. Muriel tells her story with honesty and authenticity, and even at times with humor, although we never doubt for a moment that it must have taken great courage to tell it. Not only is the book a page-turner, it’s one that can be of great help and encouragement to people who are facing similar problems. Highly recommended!
Picked it up and couldn’t put it down

I had no idea the treat it would be to read this book when I got it. It’s an easy read and you find yourself constantly wondering what will be next in the author’s amazing journey. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for inspiration to overcome personal challenges.
The meaning of invincible
By Allison Wright
I do no justice to the beautiful descriptions throughout the book which surprise and delight the reader with gratifying frequency, yet with a total absence of pretension. It is this lack of pretension which is most appealing. I have read many of the publications meticulously detailed in the bibliography, and have experienced, whether at first or second hand, a goodly number of the alternative therapies explored by the writer. I have read of many people’s journeys towards self-fulfilment. Yet I have never come across an account that is as once quite so well-modulated, humble and powerful.
The wonder of “Finding My Invincible Summer” lies in the lean simplicity with which it deftly deals with complex issues. It is a warm, thoroughly honest and intensely personal account which almost unintentionally invites you with a solid sense of humour and well-grounded gentility to enter a realm where you, too, may live your “invincible summer”.
Would love to see this movie!

I found this book so informative and interesting on so many levels. What varied and honest vignettes. I love how the author transcends her family patterns by growing both spiritually as well as intellectually.
A fascinating story!
By Marise Lashley
While I have always been in awe of Muriel’s translating prowess, I had no idea that her life story was such a fascinating one. Her life experiences, which include her struggles with searing physical and emotional pain but also her bliss derived from her marriage to her husband and soul mate, seem to have ultimately led her to a place of peace and acceptance. For some reason, I found myself unable to put down this book once I started it. For those who want to move beyond mainstream medicine and explore alternative approaches to illness, this book may prove interesting. I came away with profound admiration for the author’s courage to tell her story in such vivid and gripping detail.
A story of courage and determination
Finding My Invincible Summer is an inspirational memoir by Muriel Vasconcellos. It is a compelling story of enduring love and devastating loss. Muriel overcomes overwhelming challenges with courage and determination. Her persistence and fortitude in facing so many difficult situations eventually leads to great personal growth and self realization. The reader feels involved in the story and ultimately uplifted by Muriel’s triumph over the great obstacles that she has faced.
Thank you, Muriel, for your brutal honesty
By Deborah Escobar
Vasconcellos’ story makes for a compelling read. The deliberately straightforward voice actually sustained the experiences at a level that made the reading very comfortable. I was both horrified that a woman would have to navigate such painful experiences, but the fact that she used those experiences to become stronger was inspirational. Her chapter on visualizing/meditation encouraged me to try it myself, and it was a powerful experience that I intend to continue. I have long believed that we have within us a power we only barely glimpse, and this story makes me continue to move towards a deeper understanding. Thank you, Muriel, for your brutal honesty and for sharing the depths and heights with us.
Most definitely inspiring
Won this from Goodreads a month or so ago. It is a wonderful, well written book about a woman who didn’t give up on herself or life, even though she very well could have. Cancer, death, miscarriage, you name it, it invaded her life and tried to bring her down. She’s still here today to tell her story and let others know that there is always hope even when life seems the darkest. It’s most definitely inspiring and I will be passing this copy on to my stepmom, who will benefit from reading this now. Thank you Muriel for showing me that anything is possible through God’s grace.
A compelling read about love, cancer and alternative therapies
By Emma Goldsmith
Muriel Vasconcellos’ memoir takes the reader on a journey through her life, focusing on how she came to terms with breast cancer, her encounters with conventional treatment in the late 1970s and her search for alternative therapies. She also gives vivid accounts of life-changing events and how she manages to study and work as a translator in seemingly impossible circumstances.
I avidly read “Finding My Invincible Summer” over the course of several evenings, and in the daytime my mind was full of her flashbacks and experiences. It’s definitely worth reading if you’re interested in alternative medicine, translation, medical practice in the 1970s and 80s, or cross-cultural relationships (Brazilian/American in this case).
A story worthy of sharing with readers
By Peggy Dougherty
I bought this memoir knowing little about it or about the author. I was quite delighted to find it to be a compelling read. The writing is excellent. The author knows how to capture the reader’s attention early and not let it go. She tells her heartfelt story with insight and candor. The writing flows and draws you in.
Vasconcellos takes the reader on her remarkable journey. It’s impressive how she relates numerous events, some of them not only life-changing, but also life-saving, in a seamless, easy to follow manner. Like every good story, this one has many turning points. I found myself always wondering what would happen next, all the way to the uplifting ending. Hers is a thought-provoking story worthy of sharing with readers. I, for one, am grateful that she did so.
An absolutely wonderful book to read
Muriel is an incredible writer and has clearly brought to her readers a full picture of this journey in her life. There is a powerful message that is thought provoking, emotional and so engaging, it is hard to put the book down. Clearly she has discovered that stress is something we can overcome. The fact that she has survived three cancers and so much more, finding her invincible summer is what she has accomplished. I believe it is a must read for everyone.
I will recommend this biography to my book club
By Pat B.
As a narrator of her life story, Muriel did not get lost in a cathartic tale that some authors seem to fall into. She worte a compelling book of amazing love, devastating health, overwhelming grief and finding her personal joy. The special events that shaped her life were certainly not ordinary or boring. She draws the reader into her story and never forgets that those reading her words could find comfort in her story – and, believe that miracles can happen.
Personal and Poignant
Though I would not use this book as a source of medical advice, it is an undeniably touching and honest account of one woman’s life experiences. The author is an excellent writer and I absolutely loved the inclusion of her husband’s drawings. Her story is so personal, it draws you in and makes you experience the same emotions that she feels. Although I do not agree with many of her medical decisions, I do think that she makes an extremely important point in that you need to be a medical advocate for yourself. I don’t think I have ever seen this point conveyed so pointedly. I applaud the author for recognizing this and for sharing her other insights.
This is so inspirational. The amazing journey one takes to heal and overcome something so intense really touched me. This is a must read!
Well written and open
“Finding My Invincible Summer” by Muriel Vasconcellos is an autobiography memoir. She shares with the reader her life experiences that include love and a lot of heartbreak, loss, and pain both physically and mentally. After a couple of devastating childhood occurrences, her adult life is marked with cancer and widowhood. The best part about the book and her life though, is that it does not end in the despair or hopelessness that suffering all too often brings. The author finds ways to improve her life and she becomes her own champion. Well written and open, this is her story
A powerful journey in personal growth
By L. Gerber
Muriel’s book is an amazing story. It is both an objective account of the challenges and opportunities that life presented, and a tour of the emotional landscape behind those experiences. Her writing is powerful and immediate, full of personal insights that gave me, as a reader, some keys to fostering my own growth. I particularly appreciated her example of self-forgiveness, and the path she took to cope with repeated bouts with cancer. She is a remarkable example of resourcefulness and learning to look within for her own truth. But don’t expect to find a tragedy, she prevailed and went on to an extremely productive career.
by José Neistein
Finding My Invincible Summer is a remarkable memoir. Written in clear, transparent, elegant English, it turns out to be not only a vibrant, candid full-length portrait of the author, but also – and above all – a transcendent, moving personal statement of the very meaning of existence. This is one of the reasons, if not the main one, why this book is appealing to so many readers, coming from all walks of life.
It tells us the basics about the mysteries and the trade of living, of conquering the right of rejoicing by overcoming grief, injustice, pain and frustrations, with the help of determination, understanding, discipline, discernment, awareness and love. Much love. It is a convincing lesson on how circumstances can make us sink into deep despair, but then by standing up for ourselves, by relaxing and letting go when necessary, acquiring the tools to reemerge forever whole. This fascinating account of the author’s life, fears, loves, passions, and ordeals tells us also how she made peace with destiny and herself by dispelling her ghosts, and finally looking into the sun’s eyes. But Muriel Vasconcellos’ book is more than the story of her journey: it is the journey of mankind at large. I think that her major merit is that she had the courage and generosity to put them candidly down on paper. We can all identify with her book. More than invincible, her summer is triumphant.
The Muriel I did not know
by Marcio V. Pinheiro
Muriel married my uncle. I have known her for years. Yet I really did not know what she had gone through in her life I guess she never want to bother her friends and relatives. Suddenly she decides to tell it all. Not feeling sorry for herself or showing self pity from what life reserved for her. On the contrary, she shows her invincible self to us in a reaffirmation of life that it is an example for all of us. And she writes very, very well, a talent I did not know she had. I am proud of having her as a relative.
